Hi Chris,

I also tried rode with the sanken. But the volume is just not loud enough (at all!). What is your experience, because the audio of the videos that you shoot for Yoga with Adriene seem loud enough. Do you have any recommendations on that? Do you do anything with the sound after recording to adjust the volume?

I have to say I use it with my macbook air, but that shouldn't be the problem.

Interesting. We haven't had an issue with the volume, but we are running it into a camera where we can monitor and adjust the input levels. The mic and transmitter had pretty good levels out of the box. I'm sure we have tweaked them over the years, but we haven't run into issues with low volume.

Did you have the same issues with just the Rode Mics but without the Sanken?

I also have never tried running it directly into a MacBook Pro, but you might take a look at Settings > Sound to see what kind of levels you're getting.

Thanks for your input. It seems a bit better without the Sanken, but still not good enough.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for sharing!

Can you also share something about the lights that you use?

For sure! Everything we use is LED and it's all by Aputure. In the Studio we use Aputure 600c with Aputure Lantern 90s. This gives us a big soft area of flattering light. We love the lanterns! https://www.aputure.com/products/lantern/

For the YWA videos, we use Aputure Amaran F22s. https://www.aputure.com/products/amaran-f22x/

Hmm Chris. I suspect you have an Interface issue with the proprietary Sanker mic connector. High-quality, high reliability mics like the Sennheiser and Sanker realize it’s bad engineering to use a standard 1/8 inch TRS connector which can become disconnected or have noisy connections. Check this out for ideas on how to get an interface adapter to the standard 1/8 inch TRS connector.

Many moons ago I used to link up with the film industry pros regarding technical audio discussions including esoteric issues like adapter connectors. if you are interested and can’t find a solution to interface with the standard one, a pinch TRS connectors let me know.

Happy hunting, Michael

Hey Michael - Yes you are totally correct on this. Right now it's working good for us with the Rode's and Hollylarks. But we may give one of these adapters a shot one day. Thanks for the information.

Howdy Chris - nice to catch up with the latest with your rigs and thinking.

Yeah back in the old days the Sennheiser Evolution were an industrial strength workhorse and I coupled them with the Countryman mics, not being able to bite the bullet to buy multiple Sanden COS-11D mics (standard for the Hollywood film industry). A few years back I got a few sets of Rode's which were okayish, then the DJI Mic 1 and finally the DJI Mic 2 have proven to be way ahead of the competition for a fair price. And yes, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is amazing when it comes to its super-small form factor... especially with the small carrying pouch and the strap loop, sliding my belt thru to easily keep on my side for quickie run-and-gun shots. And the small pouch holds the extender battery with 1/4-20 UNC tripod thread size, a DJI Wireless mic with mini windjammer (much better mount than the DJI Mic 1) and the camera case even holds two ND filters and a small tripod base - unbelievable form factor! On the road for travel videos getting angled perspective shots, we love the Insta360 X3 with great software and often use their nifty 10 foot selfie stick to simulate drone shots which would either not be allowed or practical in many environments (with people or obstacles around). When I'm backpacking or hiking and need to zoom, the older Sony RX100 VII is still my fav and fits in a small fanny pack with a 2 foot extendable selfie stick. Similarly, in another bigger fanny pack I have a DJI Mini 3 with an external monitor/controller (today at Costco I was tempted to upgrade to the Mini 4 for $750 (w/o the monitor/controller but I imagine my existing model will work). We also have a few Canon DSLRs (90D for livestreaming) with the assortment of lens but never converted to the mirrorless and for small form factor today, I'd go with the Sony A7 CII for travel photography and carry the 24-105mm f4 and 50mm f1.8 lens.

BTW I'm on the Board of our community access channel and just bought them two PXW-Z90 Handheld Camcorders - I didn't think it would fit my style but shooting events, I've come to appreciate the 29–348 mm lens.

Happy trails, Michael

Hey Michael! Great to hear from you. And thanks for letting us know about your gear. That's a LOT of great stuff.

I do love the DJI Mic 2. That's what I use personally. But there's some issue with getting the Sanken we have to connect to the DJI. I'd have to ask Grant specifically what the issue is, though.

The Sony RX100 series is still amazing. It may be the last great pocketable point-and-shoot camera line.
